Make certain you also pick up a tube of dielectric grease and use it generously when replacing the plug and COP.
When you get more time to do the rest of the plugs, pick up a new boot and spring ($5 at AutoZone) and try it on your old COP in a different cylinder. The COP is probably okay and it's just carbon tracking or insulation breakdown inside the boot.
Ok, replaced #1 COP and plug. According to the code, that was where the misfire was. Just for confirmation, #1 is passenger side front? My fiance just informed me that the cel was flashing again. Injector maybe? Anything else? Thanks
Just want to confirm that a flashing CEL on 2000 Nav 5.4L does not necessarily set a code. Hadn't had my truck on the highway for sometime. Just took her our and had CEL flash for about 20 sec (maybe more--maybe less) accompanied by slight shudder at 65MPH on CruiseC. It then stopped flashing and engine smoothed out--drove couple hours more--CEL didn't come back on. I have also had rough idle when engine cold which clears when it warms up and no CEL--just put in new IAC--didn't help
Just had AutoZ pull the codes---none were set so apparently the condition didn't last long enough to tell me which cylinder if it was a misfire.
Unfortunately I'm looking at a 12hr ride in a few days(one way!). Not sure what to do. No time to do plug,COP,and wire job myself and I know if I take into dealer it will be $$$$ cause they'll do all of that.
Anyone with suggestions? I suppose I should buy a COP/Plug/wires just in case I have a problem and attempt to change out on the road if need be.
But at least I wanted to indicate that in my case no code was set even though the light was flashing.
Also can someone tell me what is meant by 'active misfire'---of course I know what a misfire is--but what is meant by 'active'????
Navishock, I have heard that once one of the COP's goes, the others will shortly follow, my 01 Expy was doing the same thing, and then got worse and worse, to the point that I actually thought it was going to die when I came to a stop. I had the flashing SES light at the beginning but could not for the life of me get it again, I tried everything, flooring it to get on an on ramp, everything. I finally ordered 8 COP's from ebay for $100 bought the plugs, and took it to a mechanic friend that charged me $180 to replace everything. It now runs like new!!
I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on it. $100 for 8 COP's is a great deal from what I have seen. I hope it doesn't come down to it anytime soon. Trucker22, not sure if flashing cel stores a code but when mine stayed on is when I had the codes checked. It showed a misfire on #1. CEL went out on it's own before I replaced COP and plug.
