I'd like to get some more flow thru my carb, a (stock) 2150 2-bbl (1.08") on a mildly built 400 in an '82 E350 van (read: 'heavy').
I understand the 2150 can be made to flow >400cfm and i need to keep it for smog (CA), so I'm looking for a 1.21" to rebuild.
Can I use just about any 1.21" 2150 carb and rebuild it to my specs? or do i need to fiind one from same year with similar numbers in order to recreate the current calibration?
sorry if that's a dumb question. As you can tell, I haven't mucked with carbs much. :-)
That's a tough question. Your main issue isn't going to so much be the calibration as much as the following issues: First, you need to find a carb with the same PCV setup as your old one. Some systems feed the PCV system from the back of the carb, while some systems feed the PCV from the front of the EGR spacer plate. The fuel bowl vent system needs to match as well. Some systems vent the fuel bowl out the top of the carb to the atmosphere, while some carbs have a fuel bowl vent valve on the front of the carb that goes to the evap can. One more note: make sure to plug all unused vacuum ports on the new carb once it's installed, in the event that the carb's previous setup had something your van won't.
Once you find the correct setup, the carb turning is just going to have to be trial and error. For your idle mixture screws, turn them all the way in, and then back out 1.5 to 2 turns (closer to 2 if it were me). I'd set the accelerator pump stroke on the third from the bottom step. I'd probably start your choke out on 1 or 2 rich. Your idle\fast idle speeds can probably remain the same. I think these settings will get you in the ballpark and you can tune from there.
