I am about to purchase an 04 E-450 box van witha 6.0 Diesel. I am very affraid to buy it from what I have heard about this engine. I read up on it on here and that made me feel somewhat better. I have a few quetions. I have never owned a diesel so I am wondering about fuel gelling up. I live in Pittsburgh and it has been very cold. How cold is too cold and if the truck has a plug to plug it in what does that keep warm and will that prevent problems? Also it has 53k on it. What matience should be done at this time or near future? And what should I do to keep it up and running. I will using this truck to make a living driving very long trips and cant afford for it to fail me.
First...get the VIN so that your local Ford dealer can provide an OASIS report for you or one of our resident techs can run one for you here. This report will provide you with info regarding any Ford warranty work orders. This is VERY important.
As for fuel gelling, you are in Pittsburg so they should have winter blend fuel from November to March or April. That should help with fuel gelling. You should probably add a fuel additive religiously to help with gelling among other benefits year round. If you read around in the 6.0 forum (here) you will see many posts on both. There are also posts for when to plug in. I usually plug my truck in at below 32 deg F. This will help the engine run smoother and less wear and tear. diesels are more cold blooded than what gas engines are and plugging in will help that problem. you are heating the engine with an electric heat element. As for5 maint. just follow the manual but as always change the oil religously (every 5000 miles) with new oil filter. Change the fuel filters every 15000 miles. Change the air filter as needed. Everything else should be the same. Good luck and as KW said check the vin # and search the vehicle.
