Is it a limited slip? Sounds like it might be. They'll make noise if there is not enough friction modifier additive. You're almost better off pulling the rear cover off and inspecting, especially if you suspect something floating around in there. Loose parts in a differential is a bad time...
The tag on the rear cover will tell you if it's a factory limited slip. A normal tag will reed 3 55 or 3 73 or 4 11 ... etc. A limited slip will have something similar to a 3L55 or 3L73 or 4L11 .. etc.
