I am going to get a sway control bar to help with the sway. I know a 5th wheel must pull nice and hold the weight better but we are just not into them plus with the toper on the bed kinda wont work. I like those little c-betr mirrors, have to get me a pair of those.
As far as not using overdrive, that trans will shift out of overdrive automatically when pulling a hill. I always use overdrive. No problems.. If the trans goes back and forth between OD and third gear, then I would turn off the OD. But, personally there is nothing wrong with using OD when towing..Your trans will actually run abit hotter if you use 3rd gear of the time.. and heat is what usually kills the trans.. Would suggest and trans oil gauge.. 210 degrees is getting into the danger zone. I am using a dip stick trans gauge from Geno's Garage and it works great.
Ok..Now I am perplexed!!! Ok this whole OD thing, I was towing/hauling about 4,000Lbs between Pheonix AZ and Flagstaff AZ and I had OD on and going up some of the 4-6% uphill grades It wouldnt shift down, I would have the go pedal on the floor and black smoke puring out the pipe and this damn trans would not down shift. My truck was totally stock except a MBRP 4" exhaust, so in order for me to get it to go down a gear I would have to press the OD button to turn od off. I had some truckers passing me on uphill grades until I turned od off and then the truck would take off like a rocket. I know its kinda off topic but maybe someone will be able to help me with this. Its really no big deal anymore cause I dont have anything to tow anymore.
My guess would be something is not right with your tranny. I tow all kinds of trailers - even with my 43 foot flatbed that wieghs 9000 lbs empty - I let the tranny pick the gear. If it needs to shift it does. I can however help it keep speed up by downshifting manually prior to loosing some momentum on hills.
If your load is heavy enough I have found out that the only time it will hit OD is going down hill. In that case I kicked out the OD for the entire trip.
I know it downs shifts out of OD in any other situation so maybe i didnt push the gas down far enough and it lost momentum faster than expected. Its fine now but I have not towed in a while...well I guess I will just have to watch for it again when ever I tow again.
...... I would have the go pedal on the floor and black smoke puring out the pipe and this damn trans would not down shift....
Having the go pedal to the floor with smoke pouring worries me about EGT's. I tow 9500# and I have noticed that as soon as you start loosing the big MO....Momentum....manually take it out of OD. I normally hit the hills between 65 and 70 if at all possible, and as momentum drops me to about 55 or so, insted of lugging up the hill, kick it out of OD and let the revs go back up. When you do this, watch your EGT. By then it will have peaked (I've seen 1200 for a second or 2) then as soon as the engine speeds up, the exhaust cools off pretty quickly....Lugging it is not good for sure, and ease off the pedal just prior to dropping it down will also prevent a hard jerk with the shift. I am a firm believer in letting the truck do the work, but help it out when you can......manually do the downshift and don't have the pedal all the way down when you do to prevent rapid revs and the hard shift and even just ease off the pedal when it does shift back into OD. Helping ease the burdon on the tranny just might make it last a few thousand miles longer...
I have a 2001 PSD swb srw w/ juice attitude 5" exhaust & K&N fipk. I tow a 11500 dry 5th wheel about 6000 miles a year. I always found it funny to hear people say "you can't tell it's back there" because I sure as heck can. Mind you I drive it overdrive on 70mph when I can, I get 12 mpg and to date(knocking on wood) without problem. I have, had the tranny built, added an external tranny filter, added an external cooler 36K gvwr. My trans temps stay under 180( I live in Georgia and travel the south. My egt's max out about 850 on rare ocassion. I can't imagine towing with anything else.
Brakes, brakes, brakes.
When your trailer weighs more than the truck does it will want to push you down the hill. Don't even consider driving that trailer without hooking up the trailer brakes. You'll end up jack-knifed before you can think about it.
EGT's 850*????? that must be post turbo??? if i were you i would move that probe to pre turbo. i just did it to mine and it makes a huge difference. you will be supprised how hot the egt's get while towing!!!! sure opened my eyes and changed my mind about "getting up the hill the fastest"!!!! JMO
I purchased my 99.5 new and have been towing several differant heavy 5th wheels since march of 99. Actually 20 years prior but with big block Gassers. Your truck will not have a problem with a 9k trailer. I suggest having a Banks Trans Command installed. I have been hauling in OD for years. I do take it out of OD when the truck starts to hunt for the best gear. Only in situations where there are alot of hills, not an ocasional hill. My truck is stock with no special goodies. I did get rid of the water out of my engine, water ruins every engine/radiator, i've ever towed with. I run NPG+by Evans, it's a waterless coolant, no pressure. No crap in the cooling system to plug or mess up anything. Engine will run 5dg warmer, which I think is better for a diesel, better burn. I now have 68k towing heavy, tall, 5th wheels from Escapers and to our new 2004 American Star. We are loaded, from Inflatables, 4 stroke engines, generators, double pane glass windows, lots of weight. My truck still runs great. Keep it stock and keep it well maintained and keep it under 2000 rpm. Have fun with your new trailer. Joe

Hey redfire42,
the gauges are a smart idea . They will help you keep piece of mind until you decide to het the DP-Tunes, BTS, exhaust, etc, etc.
I will let my signature show you that your truck will pull the trailer. My 5th wheel is a Toy Hauler and measure a bit over 40'. I have done most of my mods because of it. It pulls good and the main thing is to think ahead, swing wide, and slow down a bit.
I have caught myself looking at the new F-450's but this one really pulls and runs good.
www.rv.net will help you with the trailer as much as FTE does with your truck.

Kwikk's got a great point as usual...that PSD will pull like there's no tomorrow (with or without mods), but you've got to be certain it'll stop. Get trailer brakes.....either top 'o the line or from the dealer....just get 'em.
I brought the TT home saturday only 15 miles frome my house. It did pull nice. I even did the speed limit. I know the truck will be fine it was just my nerves of towing something so long, 32 foot, and dealing with the sway and stuff. I just cann't wait till I hook the thing up again and pull it to start camping. Thanks for the help guys....
I do have trailer brakes, be kinda stuped pulling something so heavy and not having them..........
