performance camshaft?

Looking on the summitracing website they claim the melling camshaft to be this:

"These Melling M-Select Torque cam and lifter kits are designed for the perfect upgrade of your stock camshaft. They will provide a smooth idle, good low-end torque, and excellent pulling power. The Melling M-Select Torque cam and lifter kits include a matched set of Topline lifters to complete the installation. Rebuilding or upgrading your engine? Try one of these Melling M-Select Torque cam and lifter kits for maximum reliability."

This is the SIH-6 cam...

I cant find any info from melling saying this is a performance cam, or anything other than stock...

any input??

Thanks
Bob

I added a couple of blank lines and labels to separate what I think are meant to be the Melling cam specs vs. the factory cam specs vs. the specs they have in common.

If I'm interpreting that right the Melling has .094" more lift and .002 more duration on intake but .026 less duration on exhaust. Is that right?

I'm thinking that .094" increase in lift should more than compensate for the shorter exhaust duration to let it breathe better - especially when combined with the slight increase in intake duration...

FWIW: Summits item descriptions are notoriously inacurate. I'd do more research before installing one.

With .094 increased lift, you better have some darned good springs when you get up to 2800+RPM's.

IF it is a flat tappet cam, you might get away with it. Personally, I'd stick with rollers, for less friction, longer engine life.

One thing to rememberrabout diesel cams... you don't have much room to play with duration or lift when you have a piston that comes up within a few thousanths of the head. As a result, the effect of a cam change is usually minimal. Based on these specs, I doubt this cam would have much of an effect on performance and, like fonefiddy above, I wouldn't like to revert to flat tappet lifters. If you needed a cam at overhaul... maybe. Otherwise the dollar-per-horsepower rating on this thing would be in the negative numbers.

I'll say it again, y'all... quit wasting time and money on little stuff! Save up for a turbo kit! The only thing that comes close to matching it for power is nitrous, but the turbo can be used all the time. You'll also see a slight to moderate increase in fuel economy (once the honeymoon is over, of course). If you save up all the money spent on power-dribbles from straws, you could have the turbo kit and get the power from a 2-1/2-inch fire hose.

A wise man once said: "There's no excuse for a naturally aspirated diesel!"

If you want a good cam send yours to Delta cams in tacoma washington, they did a profile on mine to make more torque, they told me the specs but I forget. It is a small difference but does have more power midrange than the other trucks I have driven. Also with roller lifters you need to be careful, if your originals are not ticking re use them they have needle bearings in the roller and some others dont, just a bushing. I dissassembled Mine and polished the deposits off of them and they work just fine.

About how much did it cost to have that work done? Do they have a website or email?

Hmmm good to know.... tacoma is not really that far away from me... I am in BC....

My lifters are making a bit of noise... I will probably check with IH and see if they can provide me with new ones

Will do, thanks for the link! 90 clams isn't too bad for cam work at all, sounds like I'm gonna be tearing in and checking those lifters while I'm at it soon as we get some warmer weather. It was -35 degrees outside this morning
