E brake pedal not working

Did a pretty dumb thing while changing the rear brake shoes. While the shoes were off my son pushed the emergency brake pedal. The result was the tensioner and ratcheting mechanism doesn't work anymore. The e brake pedal swings freely and can be pushed down easily with no ratcheting sound and it does not spring back. Anyone have a clue as to how to reset the tensioner. It is on a 97 f150.

I'm going to take a guess that the cable disconnected from the pedal mechanism. I don't think there is a ratcheing sound on my '97. Another place to check would be the cable connections. There's one under the driver side door and another one a few feet back where it goes from one cable to two.

Well I looked a little closer and it seems as though there is a spring and gear setup in the e brake unit. The spring does not look as if it is tensioned against anything. I did notice in the Haynes manual regarding front cable replacement it says to place a drill bit through a provided hole in the unit and it says not to press the e brake while changing the cable. It does seem that it is the e brake unit and not a detached cable. I have heard that on other fords ie thunderbird ect. that you have to reset the tensioner. Any help or input is appreciated.
