2004 f-350 x-cab dually with flat bed, truck is white and has rust spots the size of a pen tip coming through the paint! this is a southern truck that does not see salt or snow. i went and talked tp ford and they said the paint is covered fro 3/36000 ,well the truck has 41000, so u can guess they said im s.o.l. but wouldnt that be covered under corrision which is 5 yrs unlimited miles. it sux when u got a $40,000+ truck that otherwise still looks new with paint that is speckled. any help or comments would be appreciated! thanks
I would say that the rust spotting is covered under the rust warranty. That does suck to have that happen. It definitely is not normal esp for a vehicle from that part of the country where there is no salt/snow. Read the rust warranty carefully to be sure if it is covered or not. If it is, go right back and have them mitigate that problem.
Wasn't there a big hoopla a while back about a bunch of super duties that got shipped by train and the steel dust from the train brakes were landing on the trucks and burning through the paint and causing premature rusting? Could this be what has happened to this truck?

in fact i took it to a paint shop today and the guy talked about a train , exactley what u said, what came about of it, truck was bought new, thanx
Lol I still have brake dust embedded in my doors. Its a little late to worry about it, and you can't see it unless your eyeball is right up on it. I dont have the enthusiasm to stand there with a clay bar (can you imagine how long it would take to clay bar a super duty?) . . . someday, someday. Just not this week.
FWIW I can tell you what it looks like. Very very tiny dots of rust. You can't even feel them, but you can't use mirror glaze and get them off either. They're imbedded in the surface of the paint. They dont even go thru to the metal. They pretty much stop there. The dust particle size supposedly just a small fraction of the mil thickness of the dried paint.
ya my 02 f250 had the same problem, and i used the mothers clay bar and spray on the paint , it worked great, i was told it was from the brakes on the trucks? not sure if thats true or not, the clay bar will work, its only $20 and a little elbow grease! good luck

Train Brake dust is very normal. When I worked at the dealer doing PDIs, every truck was given a "fallout" treatment. Basically a bath in mild acid that was suppose to eliminate this. I cant see the dust penetrating the paint? Is it localized to certain areas of the truck or all over?

My trucks got that...i keep thinking some lil gremlin is going around with a toothpick and poking holes in my paint! Its all over my truck...front to back top to bottom
For those who dont know about it, here its commonly called rail dust. What it is, it's the brake dust off the trains. You have to keep in mind that the compounds they use arent the same we do, and the stuff gets awful dang hot. So every time this train which weighs in the millions of lbs brakes, that brake material superheats, tiny bits come off, and if something is close by, the dust can stick. Not a big deal if you're a fern, but auto paint seems to attract it. It can be hot enough when it hits that it, for all practical purposes, welds itself to the paint job.
And at first, nobody's the wiser. Dealer takes delivery, have a nice day. Over time, the metal content will rust, and you'll end up with these little bug poo spots all over wherever the dust hit. Some vehicles get rained on with the stuff. Others like mine, I just have it on the front doors.
Clay bar will take the stuff out, but its elbow grease. I guess with a workin truck mine usually sees a lot worse and I just havent sweated it thus far.
i don't have anything like this on my truck, although, mine's not white either but trueblue metallic.
you woudl think for what ford is getting for these trucks, the paint would be perfect.
and they'd figure out a way to ship them by train where the dust can't get to them. we are talking big money here for these trucks. i''m glad it's not me, because they'd be repainting my truck or fixing it themselves. that's BS.
I had a Mustang w/ rail dust on it. The clay bar does pretty well, but doesn't get all of it off 90% maybe. It was a yellow car, so the specks could be seen if you were really close.
Yep, its not just the trucks either! I waxed my wifes taurus this weekend and noticed the same stuff all over her hood. I didn't see any any where else so I may get ambitious and clay bar the hood someday (yeh right). It does PO a guy to think he paid good money for a vehicle and then get crap for paint.
