I have an 89 EB w/302 and what I always considerd true duals but want someone that really knows to clear it up for me.
I really don't know what everyone means by H and or Y pipes ? The only place where my duals touch each other is a little 3" piece of 3/4" pipe with the O2 sensor screwed in. Is this called an H pipe or what ? I have no cats but with 2 flowmasters. I bought this 89 in 91 and it was this way but I think that the previous owner had it done ?
I have searched the site for exhaust and dual exhaust etc... but never found anything on my setup.
Just a question to your post, do you not have cats on your exhaust system to get more sound from your flowmasters? I have heard that removing cats increases the volume of the flowmaster tone from the muffler. Is this true? I was wondering because I have 2 cats currently and want to add a flowmaster muffler (single in / single out), will having 2 cats lessen the sound?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Nov-02 AT 11:12 AM (EST)]From what you describe, you have the closest thing to true dual exhaust on your truck. The H pipe or "crossover" pipe is that tiny pipe where the 02 sensor is fitted. Y pipe is what you would get if the exhaust from each bank of cylinders (left/right) came down under the truck and came together and stayed that way. If the only thing linking the exhaust pipe from the left side of the engine to the right is that little pipe w/ the 02 sensor in it, then you have dual. The H pipe is put into the dual for the benefit of the 02 sensor and for harmonic reasons if I understand things correctly. Some "dual exhaust" setups use a cat with two inbound ports and two outbound, some bring the pipes together to go through the cat and then seperate them again, some actually have two cats and two mufflers. You must live in an area where emmissions laws aren't to stringent because removing the cat(s) on mine would certainly fail it during a test. Not that Missouri has a visual inspection but the actual emmissions output is very tight. I nearly failed with a brand new engine and exhaust under mine.
I can only speak of mine without cats because they were never there for me to hear the difference in sound. It does give a pretty good sound but am thinking about switching over to Borla but am unsure.
GreyStreak92,
Thanks for the info. That is kind of what I thought but was just not sure.

I have a glasspack behind my stock cats and my truck is still not loud. I'm going to be adding headers,a high flow cat and 3" exahuast. I'm hoping that it will have some bark to it after that.
The cats do deaden the sound coming out of the pipes. Pretty much all the mufflers are doing is toneing it. By removing the cats or gutting them you can get much louder, but if you have emission laws you'll more than likely fail them without cats. Lucky me to live where we don't have emissions :P

1993 Eddie Bauer Bronco, 5.0/E40D, hypertech chip, 1" TB spacer, K&N drop in filter, step bars, overhead console from an expedition, no muffler, 2nd cat gutted-soon to put on headers, H-pipe, dual FM40's and NO CATS!!!
I did something interesting a few months ago and my exhaust sounds great now. I had dual pipes leaving the muffler and they were rusted and broken. The muffler and all the piping, including my 2 cats, was still in good shape. So I was going to remove the 2 tailpipes and install new ones. When I got them out of the muffler (when I say out I mean literally out, they sat inside the muffler about 6 inches each) and started it up, it sounded like I had brand new low throaty exhaust. I love it and now I don't need to spend the $300 to get the flowmaster setup that I was going to get. Mind you I don't have any tailpipes so I was concerned about exhaust inside the truck. I have been able to smell any for the 3 months I have had this setup so I figure I am good to go. Another plus is that I will still pass TX state vehicle inspection because it is only a visual one. Having the muffler and the 2 cats is the only requirement. No where does it say anything about having taipipes. So you really don't have to pay all that money to get your low tone, loud exhaust. With a few modifications and some time you can have it with what you have now.
