This has been happening for a while now and i just noticed it the other day while going through a rough road in the city. It almost sounds like the ball joints on both sides are buggered but i checked them and they seem to be alright. Everytime i go over a sudden small bump i here a bang. Not all that loud but noticeable.
My tires are only 3 months old and are both wearing to the inside which indicates that the front end is out of alignment. But before i go in for an alignment i want to make sure nothing is wrong.
I have also noticed when i lift one tire off of the ground when i attempt to turn the tire, the tie rod joint where the steering arm from the power steering attaches to the tie rod will allow the tie rods to move back and forth yet none of the tie rod ends have any play up and down or side to side. It moves on the joint without any play that would point to a worn out tie rod end. Its hard to explain but i think that could be the problem. Also sometimes the truck wants to turn to the right wile going down the highway and someties it wont.
Get a front end check from a local tire store for starters. Check the spring end bushings see if they are worn out.....the spring can contact the frame under your feet. I replaced spring bushings with Energy Suspension parts last summer.
Are you saying there is play at the steering gear to drag link or the pitman arem is moving back and forth..? the drag link that goes across the truck has a joing that wears out at the pitman arm..
Check the bushing on the radius arms.. to the frame under your feet where the attach to the frame.. these wear out.. a lot..will make a lot of noise not real hard to change.. aslo the brackets rust out and need to be replaced pretty common
I had clunking noises on my 88 250 when i hit the washboards on the dirt road by my house. I replaced the shocks front and rear and the noises went away completly.
My old 84 had a clunk when I hit bumps, it was the leaf spring bushings.
I got the poly ones from Energy, you can have the old ones pressed out or
do it the hard way like I did, I drilled holes in the rubber with a 1/2" bit until I had room to get in a sawzall blade and sawed through the steel sleeve part then hammered them out.
When I replaced the bushings on my IFS, I didn't have to cut the sleeves to get them out. They were so worn that one was halfway through the sleeve and the other had cut completely through the sleeve and had worn a 1-inch wide X 1/8-inch deep groove in the axle arm. I had to weld in some filling and grind it down to make it round again.
I don't know about your area, but I bought regular rubber replacement bushings for about $10 each. When my wife is back to work, I'll start thinking about replacing all bushings throughout with the nicer polyurethane variety.
