Are you saying that Ford buys - say a rear window - from PPG with the tinting already on it? And so to match it exactly, you would have to buy and already tinted "window" from the glass manufacturer and then install it in the door?
We Will Never Get A Exact Match For The Window Unless You Buy The Glass From What Ever Manufacturer The Dealers Get Their Glass From, I Am Guessing Ppg Since They Are One Of The Largest Distributers. But As We Know We Cant Put Or Should I Say The Dealer Wont Put 20% Or Matching On The Front Windows. I Do Believe Its Not Against The Law To Purchase A Piece Of Glass Or Window Already Tinted From The Manufacturer But It May Be Against The Law To Put It On. Hell, Its Against The Law With The Tint I Have Now That I Matched Up With The Factory One, But Its Cheaper For Me To Peel Of The Tint Than It Is To Buy New Glass.
The glass is what we at PPG call YPY Carlite. It is @ 20% - 25% or what some call "PRIVACY" glass
Let me give you folks some idea of what I'm talking about.
We have glass with suffixes like,
CL Clear / No Tint
GT Green tint
GB Green Tint w/ Blue Tint Trim (like windshields)
YP Dark Tint/ Privacy, Limo Tint
And to finish the 3 letter suffix
Y means there are "ATTACHMENTS" either moldings or misc. brackets
N means there are NO "ATTACHMENTS".
And there are many different manufacturers of autoglass.
PPG, Carlite(FORD OEM PARTS), Guardian, LOF(GM OEM) And of course there are the foreign companies with their own brand.
The CARLITE brand is produced by Ford in Woodhaven,Mich. or in Nashville,Tn.
The PPG brand is produced at either Evansville,In. or Chillicothe,Oh.
BTW, Most autoglass is now GLUED in. The glass is now made part of the cab structural integretity.

It is against the law to have aftermarket tint on the front windshield in all 50 States. It is to protect the police when they pull over a car or truck, BUT!!! You can have a trim strip across the top no wider than 6" from the top + it is so that you can see at night when driving.

so is it possible to buy a front window glass (i.e. Carlite) with tinting to match the factory tint on the rear windows?
The tinting process from the factory is added at the batch process before the glass is pulled from a float furnace in flat sheets. There is no way to add this after the glass has left its melted form. This process started around 1997. Prior to this the tint was sprayed on and was subject to chipping off or scratching. I am not familiar with a Ford or Visteon glass plant in Woodhaven MI. There is one in Nashville TN, Tulsa OK, and another in Mexico. Dearborn Glass Plant in Michigan and Niagra Glass Plant in Canada closed years ago.
There are several different colors of tint, solar tine, batch privacy, etc. The dark tint can only be used in the rear of the vehicle [behind the front seats] or the moonroof.
Autoglass' definitions of the suffixes are right on.
You will not find an original equipment maker offering a different color as it is against the law and each piece of glass carries a trademark or stamp identifying the manufacturer, month and year the glass was cut, and plant location for government safety standards in the event a piece does not meet saftety specs and a recall is needed. You will not find billion dollar companies putting their trademark on something that is against the law and government crash standards to use.
Thanks TSP!
I hope I did not confuse the members on this board!
I always see the Country where the glass was made,
U.S.A. , Canada , Mexico , China , Germany , Several different locations from Europe.
So I see Both the "DWO" and the "FWO" with the company brands on them.
OH,,, Sorry,
"DWO" is Domestic
"FWO" is Foreign
Have a chuckle,
Guy in Owensboro,Ky. owns an F-40 Ferrari and had a coal truck put a nice little spiderweb in the glass, ALL $4900.00's worth! Thats not counting the installation either!
I have been tinting windows for a shop here that specializes in tinting, we are the only shop within 75 miles that will tint. I have been here for 10 years. All factory tint is smoke color, anything else is illegal in most states, so manufacturers must use smoke. Factory windows are always 20% and are not film, but liquid dipped or sprayed. Aftermarket tint to match would be 20% charcol or smoke, both the same thing. 20% tint is 20% tint, unless you buy a specific color of tint (red, blue, yellow so on) it will always be smoke.
I've always wanted one of the windshields Ford put out years ago that had the Irridium look to them. I believe they came on the Taurus. Looked like Oakley sunglasses...
Too bad they won't do those anymore...
What was GM's minivan that had the purple tint? It had the slank nose front on that vehicle.
Chinese response,,,,
"OH SO SORRY! NO PURPLE TINT!
You either get the
CL , GT!
Windshield?
DWO1362GTN w/ Ford Logo in Black Dot Across Top.(Solar Visor)
DWO1206GBN Tint strip on top & VIN Notch on bottom.
BTW,,,
The other name for those Lumina's
"LUMISCUTTLES!"
Would not be caught dead in 1 of those!
I hated those Luminas. They sure were aerodynamic...
I don't see how anyone cleaned the inside of the glass. They would need extension handles to reach it.
I wish you could get the coating that was on them though. I wasn't in to the purple, but I did like the irridium colors Ford used. I don't know howwell that stood up to use though...
Anyway........
Back to the regular scheduled thread topic....
I have the bronze tinted factory glass. I haven't found anything that matched up to it. Its been almost to the point where I have started looking through junk yards and places to find just regular clear glass...
