I'm looking for information on installing a spotlight in my 1975 ford PU. I searched and found a bunch of threads, all the info I was looking for, but now I can't seem to get back there as I guess there is a limited # of searches allowed. Did anyone else experiance difficulty with the site today or was it just my connection, maybe I need to lay down $$$$? Thanks Mel
Unity provided Ford with most of their spotlights from the 1930's and later. A local supplier here in the L.A. area still has the lights and mounting brackets for older Ford cars and trucks.
At work the Chevys had the spot light mounted beside the windshield and the Fords got them on the roof by the company mechanics. That's just how they were doing them in the 70's.
Everytime you used the spotlight, the roof mount kicked butt, everytime you hit your head on the handle you wanted to kick the spotlight! ;)
The factory mounted spotlights on Ford trucks either in the roof, or through the dash, as the windshield pillars are too thin to mount spotlights there. A hole was drilled through the dash on the left, and a bracket was then mounted to the cowl panel. The roof installation was much easier, but you had to be careful not to bang your head on the handle/****.
do you have any problems when driving. Is that in the way at all.
Stephan
I don't think so, but I've had them in all my vehicles and I'm used to them. They're designed to fit the vehicle so they should not be overly obtrusive.
Thanks for the pics, I was able to access them today. I think my dad had his in the top, tho I don't know how the cab lights didn't get in the way. I suppose with the unity mount would come instuctions but do ya got any helpful hints? Unity said the light needs a 12" shaft, is that what you used? Thanks again Mel
The 12" shaft will be too long for a roof mount...about half that would be about right. See if there's an equipment place in your area that adds emergency lights/spotlights to police cars and ambulances. They will (usually) sell/install for outside customers.
The 12" shaft sounds about right for the cowl mount spotlight. Measure your dash (start away from the left w/s post about 2 inches), then add about 4" from the windshield angled forward for the cowl chrome spotlight mount.
