Tire size help!

I've done the searches. All over this site and the net. But I can't find the info I'm looking for.

Original tires were 235/75 15's. The tires on it now are 31X10.5/15's.
I understand the metric sidewall graffiti, but what do the other numbers mean? Specifically, how tall are the 235's compared to the 31's?

The 31's are ... 31 inches tall (the 10.5 is the cross section width in inches).

The 235/75/15 are about 28.88 inches tall...the width are 235mm and the sidewall height is 75% of the 235.

Converted 235mm = 9.252 inches

Calculated... 2(9.252* 0.75) + 15 = 28.88 inches (two sidewall heights plus the rim)

Thus you have about 2.12 inches different in height between the two tires.

Hope this helps
