1987 E-150 No Start
I am new to the forum. I have a fairly well cared for Econoline beater with about 130,000 km. It hasn't been able to start since I parked it for the winter. It seams to be that I am not getting power to the computer because I can't hear the fuel pump turn on with the key and I don't get any spark but it turns over very well. Everything else electrical works... The fuel tank is about half full and I have a 6 year old federal-mogul fuel pump. It is very noisey normally.
I have a Haynes manual and don't find the electrical diagrams for it very helpful. Does anybody know where the main power wire on the starter relay goes in this van? I want to test for voltage at its far end from the relay without cutting into it. Is there a common part on these things that gives up? I loosened off the wires on the starter relay and moved them around a bit to clean them but that did not help. Also, I can feel the starter relay click in my hand when I turn the key.
Thanks, Steve
You need to fix the no spark problem first and then worry about the fuel.
However the fuel pump should come on for one second and then stop running when you turn your key to the ON (RUN) position.
If you do not get it to run for one second then we have a power problem in the circuit from the starter solenoid, fuse link, EEC Power relay area.
If it does run for one second then you have a problem in the TFI Module, Distributor Pick-up or Ignition Coil area.
Here is a diagram that should be close to what you have.

I checked the intertia switch and then went through the wiring diagram. It was much better than what Haynes provides.
I changed my fuel pump so I now have fuel to the engine. I'm half way to running!I also took my distributor cap off and probably did some damage to it... I sanded down the rotor, is it supposed to be a full copper bar or just the tips? I also sanded off one of the cap contacts before I realized it was supposed to be furry.
Will I need a new cap and rotor now?My coil is getting battery voltage and my aftermarket tach twitches when I'm cranking over the engine so I think I'm getting a signal to the distributor.
Any suggestions? I am going to look over the manual a bit more to see if I can't figure out what is going wrong. Every once in a while the engine gets a touch of spark because it speeds up a bit while turning over.
Cheers, Steve
It's strange that so many issues would come up at once.
