Fuel MODs?

Ok gonna bite. I have been looking into the pre-pump and regulated return fuel systems from Dennis at ITP. (Mind you he is down the street from me) He drives a 6.0L so I really have not had the chance to see how these mods perform in our 7.3L. So now I am asking those of you who have done them (Using the search I found a lot of you have). What are your honest opinions on these two mods? Would you do them again? What benefits have you seen with them? Are they worth the money? Thanks

PS this pms is hitting again.

Well, I did it because I wanted to cut the vent lines off the tank. Also, I know there are 2 filters in the tank and if they suck up debris and get choked off, I will most likely be in the middle of BFE and it would be a hard thing to get cleaned. This way, All I have to do is get the spin off filter out. I have one in my travel kit along with socket, rachet and spare CPS and tire patch kit. If air is getting into your system, it will quieten it down. If not, no change. Also, everytime I change oil, I dump some of the filter out so that if any water is in the filter, it gets dumped.

All the benefits and little cost for peace of mind. Yes, I'd do it again.

Cool. I have been running my own home brew BD for the last two years. I have found that fuel made in the summer and stored then used in winter will have a little higher water content. BD will hold mre water in solution at higher temps then at lower temps. However it makes cleaner and better fuel at higher temps. So it is a give and a take. But I feel with the added fuel water seperator it will be a little better peace of mind as well. I run the BD through two water block filters proir to puttng it into the truck and have not had any ssues but another step surely won't hurt.

What about the regulated fuel return? Have you done it? Worth it?

If I ever buy another 7.3 again, the absolute first thing I would do is take care of the fuel system and install a HX crossover line. Then take it from there.
Ford really botched the design there.
If you haven't done this yet, Fire Rooster, let me very highly recommend that you do at your next opportunity.
After it's done, you'll wonder why you waited so long.

Sweet thanks kwik. These are the kind of responses I want to hear. I am gonna do it anyway just need the reassurance that they are that good of mods. What changes do/did you see with them?

A very much reduced diesel clatter noise.
Kind of like listening to something on an AM radio and then listening to the very same station on FM. You hear everything, but it's so much better on FM.

Very very noticable difference sound. completely eliminated the cackle.

With Dennis's Kit I used the Baldwin BF1212 filter that comes with it, after 10K on the OEM filter I swapped it just to see how well the BF1212 was doing. The Old OEM was the same color as the NEW one. Form now on I will swap each annually as Dennis suggested.

Thats a great analogy Dan. I think i'll use that. And when you do the regulated return , it's like listening to a Memorex CD..

Question

OK... here's another question along the same lines, but a little fruther down the road from the in-tanks and reg return line. When you do the regulated return, is that the time when you get rid of the top-of-engine fuel filter? Or does it require some more additional filtering elsewhere before removing the on-engine filter and housing?

Newbie, its an option. You can leave the fuel bowl, because all of the kits are designed to attach right on the outlet of the fuel bowl to he the heads. I personally didn't like the look, plus i wanted to make room there for "something else", and it was easily eliminated. You need to add a filter somewhere else (i mounted mine on the frame) if you go and remove this, because there is no other filtration. I used a Dahl 150 that filters down to 2 microns, i believe. The stock filter does 15 or 40 micron, im not sure. Dockboy has a 700+hp 7.3, and i noticed he was still using the stock fuel bowl.

On the regulated return, be mindful of fuel pump lifespan. The higher pressures you run, the higher the load on the pump. There is no definitive info on the affect on the pump but assumptions can be made on motor lifespan, and a sort of curve drawn between operating load and lifespan. JMO, I have no scientific data.
