What kind of shocks do you guys put on your trucks? I have an 86 F-250 and need some new shocks. I was thinking of getting a set of Bilsteins for it, I put some on my dads 99 F-350 recently and rides pretty nice now. What do you guys recommend?
Haha, yeah my dads truck rode pretty bad too, it has dual rear wheels, and going on I-405 around Bellevue and Renton was BAD! It has about 170,000 on it and had not had its shocks done once, it was well over due! Just need to get some Bilsteins on my truck now.
I put in the KYB monomax about $100 per pair. Nice ride. I also added the helper springs at the same time to make it drive better when I have a heavy load.

Redmond & Bellevue huh? I'm in Kent. That section of 405 is pretty rough.
I'm interested in seeing some other, less costly, recommendations people make. My 2WD F250 rides like a hay wagon right now - the shocks are totally shot. Since I won't be keeping it long-term (gonna' build and keep the 4WD turbo) I want to put some decent inexpensive shocks on it...
I just got a set of Gabriel rear shocks in the mail today. I will post on how they are when I am done. I got them off ebay cheap. They got some other shocks up cheap too. For those not wanting to spend much seems like a good deal to me.
I have been using gabriel gas ryders exclusivley since 1996 on all of my vehicles. They cost 50-75% less than most shocks, and they have always worked flawlessly for me. They also ride very well. I spent this last weekend replacing all 4 of my shocks on my 88 250, it had the OEM motorcraft shocks on it, they had been there for 19 years...lol rattling like crazy!!!, So I replaced them with Gabriel gas ryders, my 250 now rides smooth and quiet.
My father in law has a 97 C2500 with vortec 350, he was almost about to shell out $300 for shocks when I saved him from wasting the money, I replaced all 4 of his shocks for $75 with gabriel gas ryders and he said a week later "my truck has never rode so well" ...lol
I put Monroe gasmatics on mine and I'd like to replace them. I don't do a lot of hauling, so my truck is empty most of the time. On my daily commute to work, I get thrown around quite a bit. Would KYBs be good for that kind of use?

Reason: Fix typo
My 91' F250 rode rough like an old hay wagon before I bought some new shocks for the front end. I got some Monroe Gas Magnum shocks, rides nice and smooth now! The old shocks were badly shot. All I need to do now is get some new shocks for rear
I have a quick one for you guys....after reading this about the Gabriel's I checked AZ's website. They claim front shocks for my '93 7.3 F350 are the G63414 in the Ultra line. I did a quick check on E bay for that part # and there's one outfit selling them, claiming it fits '85-'96 F150s.
Does that make sense?
Is it more that the springs that take the load on the front? I'd think 150 shocks would be waaaay too light duty for a diesel. I checked the rears too, same same. Fits 150s up through 450s. It must be more that the coil/leaf springs take the load and not the shocks then eh?
Learn something new everyday it appears, I figured the dually shocks would be a totally different model.
Springs take all the load, shocks just dampen sudden movement of the suspension to keep it smooth and keep your vehicle from bouncin like theres no tomorrow.
