first oil change

I've now got about 1500 miles on the new 3.0 I just had put in my 00 ranger. How long should I run this break-in oil before changing it out. The dealer said to change it at 3000 miles, but that seems a little long for the first drain doesn't it?

I would suggest you make the first change at 500 miles (ie, change it now), then at 3,000 mile mark, and from then on whatever schedule you choose. Filter is replaced with each change.
