On the other hand SaskTel isn't going anywhere, they've dropped their long distance prices now since they've been losing so many customers in Saskatoon, and that's good for everyone. Plus with their HD TV coming in they'll be picking up some business on that end.
Colin, it sounds better than what we get on Bell and for less money. How did Rouleau get its own cable company? Is it a private group or company operated?
I am not sure how it came about, itwas there when I moved their 20 years ago. They are their own company or association I guess, they have annual meetings where everyone gets to put in their 2 cents about the programming. They have done a good job with the programs and it helps that just about everyone in town subscribs although there are a few people with dishes
There is no way I'm going to get a VOIP telephone service (which is what Shaws is) until the system is standardized. There is no standards on service and security. Since the internet is the backbone of the service it also shares all the security risks. Telephone calls are currently not encrypted which means any yahoo can listen in on your calls. The main thing that worries me is the e-mail spammers are now starting to use the VOIP service. You think e-mails are bad, wait till you come home and find your answering machine is full of spam voice messages. There is also the possibility of a hacker using a virus to take out the phone company. If you don't believe me search Google for "VOIP security risks" and you'll get 14 500 000 results.

My max bundle with phone service, unlimited long distance(anywhere in north America),high speed Internet, caller ID, name display, call waiting, call waiting name display, caller ID on the t.v. , 80 t.v. channels, 27 HD channels, and all the music channels runs us about $170 a month. A little pricey but you do get a fair bit. I just hope they get the HD services running a lot better than it is right now!!!!!!
I have star choice for tv, just because its what was in my old house. Its ok, nothing special though. For internet I use telus in bc, and I prefer shaw cable because of the speeds in sask. I one time switched from shaw to sasktel, and It didnt take me a week to switch back. Sasktel was a little more stable on the speeds but didnt match up to the higher speeds from the cable net. Just what I preferred though, speed over stability.
I'm not worried about people listening to my calls, wasn't that long ago that we got rid of the party line on the farm!! Cordless phones are brutal for that as well, I pickup my neighbors on the baby monitor, and when I lived in an apartment complex we always had other conversations coming threw on our phone.
If the VOIP spam picks up like they predict that will really suck.
I guess it all comes down to a cost vs. benefit for me. At home the extra level of reliabilty certainly isn't worth $50 a month.
I'll be forced to switch back to SaskTel in a couple months when I move out of Toon Town anyway.
