Ok I called a local bone yard today to see if they had any rear ends for my truck. I told em the truck was an 88 yadayadayada... and that i want one with 4.10s in it. anyways he tells me they have a ford 8.8 out there with 4.10s in it, i was pretty happy cuz i thought wow this might be an easyer task then i had planned. So i said are u sure its 4.10s in it, he said yes. So i drive the hour out to his yard, and when i walk in he tells me it has 2.73s in it. I bout lost it, cuz i asked him like two or three times if it was 4.10s and he said yes. So i was wonderin, can anyone tell me if he was right the first time? Heres the numbers off the tag TOP LINE: s8120 BOTTOM LINE: 73 88 8a18
Finding an 8.8" with 4.10 will be very difficult since that's a very uncommon ratio from the factory in the 8.8", even though it's probably a very common ratio in re-geared 8.8s. It was, for instance, optional for the Bronco, but most people got 3.55. Not sure if it was even available for the F150.
Well i got the new rear end in, it seems to be ok. It doesnt seem like i lost any *****, but i still wanna have it re-geared. Anyone in southwestern PA or close to that specialize in rearends?
Ok I am all mixed up..... The guy i bought my truck off of told me he had a ford garage install 4.10s in it. I was kinda doubtin him, so today after i got my work done at work i did some investigatin. I tore my old rear end apart, and on the ring gear, is stamped 308. The tag on the back also said 308 on it. I figured they just didnt take the tag off. So it still has the stock 3.08s. Its weird, cuz with the old rearend i had all the power i wanted. So i called a local boneyard i kno real well and they have a rearend out there with stock 3.08s in it im gettin for $150 bucks. Im takin this rearend i just installed back to the other junkyard i got it from, he said he will take it back. I just wish i woulda did some diggin before i went and changed it out. O well lesson learned on my part, and that it take my time and dont be in such a hurry. Ok so im not gettin the other rearend till this weekend. There callin for 4-8 inches of snow here before then, if i absoulutly had to lock it in 4wd for a lil while like 15-20 feet do i have any worrys? I wouldnt drive it in 4wd but just to like getter goin straight? I got brand new MTs on it, so i do have a lil edge on the snow.
That is on the expensive side, but it can cost about $150 for a ring and pinion, and about $100 for a master install kit, and about $300 for labor, so your looking at $550 per axle, so $1,100 for both. This is about what my local off road shop charges.
count the teeth on the ring gear.
count the teeth on the pinion gear.
divide the ring gear with the pinion gear. this will give you the ratio.
41 teeth on the ring, divided by 10 teeth on the pinion,=4.10
if you are in snow, or on ice, and need to use 4X4, yes you can do it. but with a 3.08 front, and a 2.73 rear, as soon as you hit hard pack your front will be turning slower than your rear, and you will get nasty things happening in your transfer case.
you will need to put it in 2 wheel drive as soon as you hit the hard pack, and unlocking your hubs as soon as possible will not be a bad idea also.
I was very proud of the ol girl tonight. See with these other tires i had before my Timberlane MTs i had to lock it into 4wd with a light dustin. I was takin my gf home tonight and she lives on a steep hill. Earlyer it snowed now its rainin and so ya kno its all ice now. Anyways her mom called and said that her cousin in his 03 dodge ram 1500 hardly made it up in 4wd. Anyways i went to take her home and i turned onto her hill, and i put it in 1st gear and i crawled right up it in 2wd i was soo happy, it was like reaching one of my goals in life. Lol.....
