Haven't seen any updates so I'll throw in my two cents ...
My wife's 99 Taurus wagon had a heating problem like this; good temp reading, new thermostat, etc. Last fall I hooked up a couple hoses to the heater core reverse of normal flow. The discharge side was hooked to one of those hose sprayers with the garden hose thread on the discharge, the inlet side hose ran into a white 5 gallon bucket so I could see what it was doing.
I started out by just turning the cold water on to backflush the core. I got some stuff out. I then started pulsing the flow by banging the sprayer handle with the palm of my hand ... lots more came out. I then switched to hot water and pulsed it and then the junk really came out!!
This really shocks the heater core and if not in good shape could ruin it but since in this case I had nothing to lose I gave it hell. It seemed to work as my wife quit complaining about no heat.
