I had the therostat housing bolts break off in the water pump. Buy them at INTL. Cheaper than ford. I also installed a billet t-stat housing and 203 thermostat. I used a strap wrench on the water pump pulley to get the fan clutch off. If you buy the Airtex pump, lay the water pump seal in the sunlight(warm it up) to flatten it out. That makes the installation easier. Good time to change the LPOP as well. ITP has a pump for $70, thats what I did. Thats all i can remember now.
Make sure you do not follow the torque spec in that article on the WP Bolts. The correct spec is 17 -18 ft/lbs.
Pullinair if you dont have the pump yet oriellys sells a nice 1 piece (no lower extension gasket) for 149.00 and lifetime waranty (MP4110 in think). Check my gallery
I did mine last week. The hard part for me was getting the right tools to remove the fan clutch. Autozone rents the tools however I went through two different sets of them and none were the right ones. I used a 20" chain wrench to hold the pulley and an 18" cresent wrench to remove the big nut. Once I had the right tools the job only took two hours or less. As others have stated just don't overtighten the bolts (18 lbs) and make sure your gaskets seat right and you will be fine.
What bolts are reverse thread? My new water pump has right-hand threads on it for the 1-7/8" nut. Im a little confused about what may be reveerse threaded.
jkeen, I'm gonna give the chain wrench a shot becuase my strap wrench is a hair to short. I'm going to put a thin peice of rubber under the chain to not ding up the pulley.
I went to Sears and bought the "Professional" strap wrench in an plastic case. It was about 25 bucks. Wedged that puppy in there and it came off. Not without a fight though.
The fan clutch bolt is reverse thread (Big one) the rest are normal.
My fan clutch bolt was not reverse thread. My replacement pump is also not reverse thread. I wonder if it is a year thing.
Could not finish the job tonight becuase I got my inlet pipe off the old pump and rendered it to rusted to re-use. New pump did not come with new inlet pipe soo I'm stuck searching for one tomorrow. Any part #'s out there on it?
One more question. I have ford OEM coolant in it now. Spillled alot when i drained it. Can I add any type of coolant as long as it is green when topping it off? System was flushed a year ago and re-flushing tommorow is out of the question to add 100,000 mile coolant. I just want to top off with something when I get her fired up.
