The owners manual states that the oil in the rear diff is intended to be good for the life of the vehicle. However, it does not say the same for the front. Even considering that the oil is Synthetic, I find this hard to believe. I have 75,000 on my 04 4X4 and have a noise coming from either the transfer case or one of the diffs when the all wheel drive when it engages. Could this be the oil??
Last month I changed my rear diff lube because of a noise while driving my 03 4x4 xp. I was told that if I had limited slip differential the clutches could be starting to go bad, and the worst case scenario would be the ring and pinion, or a bearing if I was lucky, I changed the fluid in the rear one, 2 quarts of mobil1 75.140 and 4oz of friction modifier, the noise did not go away at all, but you have to really put attention to notice it.. (At 43.000 miles the fluid was very dark and metallic )
Sounds like I might want to change the fluid no matter what the book says. I did change the transfer case oil today and was surprised to how very dark it was. Any idea how I tell if I have a limited slip Diff or not?
Seems to me the differential tag has a L on it for limited slip. Mine says 3L55 and I always thought it meant 3.55 ratio with the L replacing the decimal point to indicate limited slip.
Or you can jack up the rear wheels and turn 1 (in neutral) the other will turn the same direction if it's a limited slip.
Hope this helps
