I'd have to disagree. The auto hubs, when taken care of correctly, do exactly what they were designed to do.
If you run a search in the SD forum you'll find a large amount of information pertaining to the care and upkeep of the auto hubs, along with an equally significant amount of negatives as well. I suppose, as with most things, there's abit of personal preference involved.
The auto hubs are crap.
They do not work in extreme cold and you can't count on them to unlock when they do.
My hubs have not worked properly since the truck was new and I have maintained them to perfection.
And soaking them in ATF is not considered maintenance to me as I prefer complete disassembly.
Anyway, install a set of Warns and your good forever.
I have a '97 with original auto hubs (don't know how they compare to the newer ones but....) I know that 99 percent of you out there wouldn't give a dollar for 'em, but I have had no problems whatsoever with them. It's stayed below freezing temps here for over a week now and I have used them in the snow plenty of times with no problems. For occasional four wheel drive use they are fine. If you are hitting the trails or whatever, maybe not. Also, what is this soaking in ATF thing mentioned above? As far as unlocking, when you need to go back to two wheel just back up about a two feet after shifting out of 4 wheel and they unlock everytime for me. I think dcf put it right when mentioning personal preference.
Guys thanks for the feedback on the hubs but i didn't make this post to start a war between auto and manual hubs. Just seeing if anyone is interested in a set of hubs. Please stay on topic with this post. Thanks
