Gears won't give you more "power", but it will give you better acceleration, b/c they will put your engine in the proper working RPMs.
Gears aren't that expensive.
You could get a set of ring and pinions with master install kits for about $500, but the expensive part is they are extreamly hard to install, and usually requires a proffessional to do it right, which could cost another $500-$600.
