I have an 03 F-250 w/ 7.3. All of the sudden I try to go to work yesterday morning and truck will not shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. Shifts fine from 1st to 2nd. goes into reverse fine, dosn't slam. tranny is not low on fluid, dosn't heatup, just won't shift out of 2nd. pulled codes and gave code that said shift error 2nd-3rd and incorrect gear ratio in 3rd gear. Shop is trying to say there is some kind of internal damage, I can't believe this. The truck has not had any other problematic symtoms. Any Ideas? i think that it might be the shift solenoid, or a bad connection or a broken wire?
When these tranny experience excessive slippage they will go into "limp-in-mode". It will not shift past 2nd. Sometimes an internal error can happen to a perfectly good tranny. Reset the PCM by disconnecting the batterys or pulling the PCM fuse under the hood (#9 IIRC). IF the tranny acts up again you may very well need to get further help.
My transmission would shift 1-2 perfect, not shift to 3rd, reverse had a LONGGG delay. Gave me a 2-3 shift malfunction code and 3rd gear incorrect ratio. Tranny shop said i burned up my foreward clutch and converter. 1300 dollars later and apparently im good as stock
Ok guys, Ford totally rebuilt the trans. All new clutches, VB, shift solenoids, torque converter, everything. Got it back thurs. night. Hooked plow up Fri. morning, plowed my driveway out and it did the same thing! Took it right back to the dealer and their tech. drove it and he said it shifted fine. I took it back home, plowed one more driveway and it did it again. So I let it sit out in my driveway running for about 20 min. got back in and it shifted fine. I drove it all weekend and it shifts fine. I really think it is getting snow someplace when I plow and messing with the shifting. The part that really sucks is I had to pay $1250 for a trans. rebuild that I didn't need, and still have a truck that is acting up. Any thoughts on where to look to fix this problem?
Did you pull through or back over any snow piles near bumper height? There is a sensor on the rear differential that can get easily messed up by hitting it with snow or the like. It's called the VSS (Vehicle speed sensor) and when this goes up or acts funky, it can cause all sorts of problems. Try pulling the sensor, cleaning it, and sticking a liberal coat of Di-electric grease on the connections, making sure the detent for the plug is not broken.
