I have a 91 aerostar xlt with power steering. The shaft in the rack and pinion has excessive clearance between it and the pinion gear causing my wheels to shake while braking. Is there a way to adjust this or do I have to replace the unit? Thanks.
That's the way I'd do it but many times folks buy their parts before they get started. It also handles the "oops, we thought we had one in stock" response.

Funny! I heard that same statement two days ago at the local parts store. The "computer" showed that they had two idler/tensioner belt pulleys for my van in stock. Upon looking for them, they were nowhere to be found and I had to wait until today for them to get them. Luckily I was just stopping by and did not drive 25 miles after talking to them on the phone.
(Wonder if one of the employees has an Aerostar similar to mine.......)
make sure the tie rod inner and outer ends, u and l ball joints, suspension arm bushing and shocks are all tight with no excessive wear....
check all bolts on front suspension for broken bolts, especially the upper arm frame bolts
also check pads, rotors and back brakes for excessive uneven wear
I have already replaced inner and outer tie rods, upper and lower ball joints, rotors, bearings, and pads. Next is arm bushings, rack and pinion, and new alt. Then maybe it will be safe enough again to hit the freeway packed with seven people and loads of paintball gear. The shaking kept getting worse and worse every trip and I would tell my friends one of these times Im gonna roll it and its gonna become a giant human blender. Rack and Pinion= $69.99 with $130 core charge at Autozone.
