Anybody know what's supposed to trigger the rear seat belts to lock. My wife recently had to make quick stop...says the front seat belt locked up but the seat belt in the rear where my daughter was sitting didn't and she said my daughter actually lifted out of her booster seat... we then tested another seatbelt in the rear and same thing the fronts lock but the rears don't... anybody noticed this problem?
"Mechanical pretensioners use an inertial wheel with a pendulum device that moves under the rapid deceleration of the crash to lock the belt into place. Such mechanisms can often be detected by giving a sudden tug on the belt. A mechanical pretensioner will automatically lock the belt into place, with the intent of limiting occupant travel in the event of a crash." Courtesy - http://www.tierone.com/seatbeltpretexcerpt.html
You can prevent your daughter from flying around by pulling the seatbelt out all the way until you hear it click. When you let it go back in it will be locked in one place. Great feature for car seats but maybe not the best for booster seats, depending on the design.
Thanks for the tip... if somebody didn't do that (pull the seatbelt all the way out)would the seatbelt work in an accident? Seems like a major safety issue here?
I stand corrected. ALL the outboard belts have mechanical tensioners. (I think it's required by law.)
If yours doesn't work then I would presume 3 things.
1. It is not operational. Seatbelts have a higher time limit under warranty. Your local dealer should be able to help
2. Your daughter did not displace enough weight against the belt during that sudden stop to "trigger" the mechanism. If so, I would (again) look at #1 and if all works okay, then either try a different seat in the truck or use the method I described above. (post #2)
3. Your lifted truck "absorbed" a lot of forward motion due to the extended travel provided by the springs and bigger tires. It absorbed enough to not activate the locking mechanism in the seatbelt. (Just a WAG, BTW)
Does she have a backrest as part of the booster seat? I know my 6y/o does. Maybe that would help??
On our Ex we KNOW to pull the seatbelt out all the way to engage the locking mechanism... been doing that in the last 5 or six cars....
and it definetly works with our 3 year old granddaughter...
And I think it's in the owners manual... Page 122 thru 129 ...
SEVEN Pages devoted to what you should do with a Child
Don't have a manual or would rather search a a softcopy ?
Has anybody actually tried their rear seatbelts... curious if I'm the only one experiencing this?
Hmmm...I'll be out today with my kids. One is still in a booster seat. I'll slam on the brakes and see what happens. Actually....I tested all mine yesterday. They lock-up with the same amount of force as the fronts. Wonder if the angle or something could be "off". That's why I asked if she had a backrest. usually the belt can snake through a slot on the top of the back to help get the "right" angle.
How much does your child weigh and how tall is she? My wife is a car seat tech and will answer any and all questions to car seats. Maybe I will post a new topic for all car seat questions.
Well the rears do lockup but it takes substantial force if I grap them and really yank hard and fast they will lock however it takes way more force than my little daughter weighs and it seems it would take quite an impact to make them lock up. Under heavy breaking I can't get them to lockup at all it seams that it would only lock under an impact.
Thanks all we are now pulling the belts out all they to lock them.
