Friend is giving me his 86 bronco, with the 300 six, and a 4 speed manual. Motor has a tick, and clutch is weak. Body is rusty on the outter skin, and of course, you know what the tailgate looks like. Cant beat the price, and figure this to be a street legal toy for play, hunt, and driving. I have a 429 jet motor that needs built, a 400m that runs, buts been sitting and needs rebuilt, a 76 ford f250 that needs more help then the free truck, and has a 205 divorced case, dana 60 rear and dana 44hd solid front. Ideas what I should do? Im a auto tech by trade, so tools and shop space is taken care of. Looking for ideas. thnx
Either the 400 or 429 will fit in the Bronco. I prefer the 429 as it can easily be a 460 by changing the crank and pistons and has a lot of aftermarket support when compared to the 400. If running an auto, I don't know what 4-speed came with the six and C6s are dirt cheap, you'll need the big C6, a rear sump (Econoline 460)oil pan, engine mounts, either a truck or econoline passenger side exhaust manifold and a remote oil filter kit. Nice, easy swap with performance you'll like.
Street legal will depend on the smog ***** or lack of in your geographical location.
I would also go with the 429. I am not sure if there is a difference in build up between marine apps and steet apps. I could find out. The machinist that rebuit my 351W has a jet boat with either a 429 or a 460.
Also, not all 429 blocks can be built to the 460. There are two deck highths for the 429. the short deck on some 429 blocks are too short for the stroke of the 460. the pistons for the 460 would pop out when crank is turned on the shorter deck.
The rear-end, the dana 60 rear might be okay, but maybe the 8.8", the 9", or the 10.25 might be a little better.
The dana 44hd solid front should be good. most all the broncos have the dana 44 in the front. There have been a number of people that have done the swap to the straight axle on the big broncos.
There were three deck heights on the 385 block; 10.300, 10.310 and 10.322. 429/460s were both used with all three deck heights. The only differences between a 429 and 460 are the pistons and cranks. The main reason for preferring a 460 in a truck is the longer stroke and extra cubes for torque purposes. The 429 will do the same job, but it takes more rpm to produce the same torque.
