I have looked through tons of catalogs and online resources, and no luck. Anyone know if these 4 bolts/nuts can be bought new, or if anyone has made use of used hardware-store bought nuts/bolts and of what strength? I have the originals, but for strength & safety I would like new ones. With everything I am putting into the front end work on my truck, I just want to "go all the way" with it. Am I being too paranoid here?
Thanks,
Mike
I've never had a problem replacing original bolts with ones from the hardware store. Since you have the originals just take them with you and match them up. I'm not totally sure about exactly what the bolts you refer to do, but if there is any question as to strength just get grade 8 bolts and you will be fine.
When replacing bolts, be sure to use the matching grade nuts and washers. Fine thread has more holding power than course thread and should be used for any application that impacts safety. Use lock nuts on applications where it is imortant they not loosen but are not likely to be check frequently. I prefer the type where the hole is deformed slightly over a nyloc where I don't plan to need to remove them again. This type lock nut should be replaced after removal rather than reused.
here's a chart of bolt grades and markings: Grade 5 and up are usually cad plated and have a golden color. http://www.boltdepot.com/fastener-in...ade-Chart.aspx
