I've been thinking about putting in a pop up sunroof into my 89 bronco. Has anybody ever done something like this? Is there any problems that I should be aware of? on freind said if I were to off road with a sunroof that the body would shake more because of the window and would crack the windshield. Could this happen and moreover is it likely to be a problem. I use my bronco for mainly regular driving with the normal mud road, grass fields, snow. I live in the northeast but i don't do any serious off roading. Should I be worried about anything? Any comments are welcome thanks guys.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Dec-02 AT 08:06 AM (EST)]1st thing first my buddy has a 79 with a sun roof has no problems with it whatsoever on or off road. But my 86 has a hump in the middle and the sun roof guy told me that this hump was for structural strength so i'm having a pare of moon roofs(Minnie sun roofs one on each side of the hump)soon I hope. the guy said this would retain structure and be no problem off road. hope this helps in your decision.
I've seen several trucks in junkyards with the sunroof cut thru the ceiling hump and none appeared to have had problems (other than being smashed or burned!).
Yeah, so after i posted this i read in another fourm that a guy put in some stabilizer bars around the sunroof to make the ceiling alittle more reinforced. Is this a good idea to do and also what would you use for the reinforcements?
I wouldn't waste the time, money, or effort. Even with a 28"x18" hole cut in it, the roof will STILL be stronger than the side of the cab with a door hole in it. And the roof always sees less stress than the side; even in a rollover.

Good deal that means I don’t have to go with a split then not sure now which way to go I had decided to put a roof consol there but we will see. One thing for sure I wont have the guy I was talking about do it though!!!
>Steve - is there a secret to viewing the pictures you reference to in your posts
Don't know if this is your prob but i'm running Norton’s Firewall and have to Disable it to view Steve's and many other pics out there.
still looking for a tweak so I don't have to do that.
I dunno. If Apostle's suggestion doesn't work, go to the home page http://www.webphotos.com , find the link for "Communities", click "Search", and put in my email stevebyars@onebox.com . It'll give you a link to all my albums, and you can pick the one you want to view.
Apparently, you're gonna come to a spot that won't let you view the pics and knowing at what point that occurs may help you figure out why it's occurring. You might also try just picking a community and trying to view other albums. There are plenty of Broncos, Fords, trucks, and automotive projects on that site, and probably anything else. See if you can view any of them.
You know, I was thinking about a sunroof in my 89 as well. I actually priced them from JC Whitney a few weeks back and was waiting until I had the spare $$$. I think it would be worth the money to put one in. I have had a sunroof in 2 other vehicles, and I never had problems with cracking...even when I went off road.
As for the stability issue...unless you are putting a sunroof that takes up the entire length and width of your cab roof...you shouldn't have any problems!
