Shcoks are only there to absorb the energy from the spring and convert it to heat (simple terms). If it wasn't for the shock the spring would continue to move about until all the energy that was stored in it from the bump you just hit was gone.
Adjustable shocks will adjust the firmness of the ride. Ranchos have the ability to adjust dampening from a "smooth, floaty ride" to "hard, kidney-bashing" ride all with a turn of a **** either on the dash (remote) or on the shock itself.
If you want more height then you gotta go airbags or new/added springs in the rear. Fronts will need all new springs, say, maybe a set from an F350 diesel crew cab.
Shocks adjust the amount of dampening. You can make the shocks stiffer or softer with a few turns of a dial. If you turn up the dampening all the way, you will notice every tiny bump or pebble in the road. If you turn down the dampening, the shocks will absorb the wheel movements and not transfer the shock to the cabin. Hence the name "Shock Absorbers".

Would these improve towing? My X tows great, but I've only towed for a short distance since I got it, so I think on a long trip it would be nice to adjust the firmness. I've looked at FireStone airbags, but they are not in the budget right now - how are the Ranchos on price?
I think they certainly WOULD help with towing stability! The ability to increase dampening due to added weight is a great thing. I would adjust mine based on payload or mission since I didn't tow back then.
Not sure of the price but a search for Rancho 9000s should yield a bunch of sites that sell 'em. Don't forget, Ranchos aren't the only ones who make adjustable shocks. I cannot remember the others off the top of my head and all I'm familiar with is the Ranchos. I had them on my 2000.
Hey Mark, by the time you but 4 rancho shocks your only about 30 bucks away from buying the airbags. I put them in mine and would definately recommend them

No I put in rear air bags, You cant mismatch shocks front to rear, so if you buy the rancho shocks 4 of them, they would be about 30 bucks cheaper than buying the rear air bags
Let me clarify, When I bought my Ex, I put 4 Rough Country shocks(one on each corner) in as per my signature. I put a pair of air bags in the rear for when I haul my trailer. They are adjustable so I leave 10psi in them all the time and and put 60psi in them when I hook up my tt. Originally when I bought my Ex I wanted to use progressive rate springs on top of the stock spring pack, I used them on my old truck and loved them. But because of the rear a/c lines they are not available for the Ex.
