My project is a 71 f250 4x4 chassis with dana 60 front(from a 79) and dana 70 rear(from a 77), 93 Cummins diesel, NV4500 Tranny and 205 Transfer case, AND a 66 Camper Special body and after four years and lots of hard work in between to make enough money to finish this thing, I'm ready to start putting my chassis together. I had it all powdercoated back then but the problem is I havnt really looked at it in that long and I didnt label the front leaf springs to tell which way they go on. From the center locating pin to the ends I have about 26 inches going one way and about 27.5 inches going the other. So the question is which end goes forward: The short or long end? Much thanx to the gallery on this site which helped me put the rear suspension together by looking at a member's pics.
Other than the leaf springs(which are stock), everything else is rather custom from here....
I don't know a lot about 4x4s, but in the past when I had the ????
I would go find a truck of same year and take a good look, and I have been
known to take a sheet of paper and a pen! And draw a pic, later I would
draw the pics or mark the parts before removal. Some one will be along to
answer your ? soon.
Thanx for the advice Wally. That's always been my favorite method and I've been know to get caught under many a truck in parking lots looking at people's handywork and getting ideas. However, I havnt seen a highboy in my area in quite some time and when I do, it's cruisin down the road at 65 mph usually sounding pretty tough. Can't wait to get this thing rollin.
I have a 71 f250 4x4 as well and i went and measured mine after reading your post. I measured from the center pin to the mounting bolts and I also got about 27.5 inches toward the rear and a little under 27 inches toward the front. So I would say the longer side goes toward the rear. MIne does have different front springs on it but I dont really see why that would matter
Yeah, I think you're right about the longer side being towards the rear. That seems to make the pin line up with the chassis snubber up above it. And luckily, that's the way I ended up putting them in on an educated guess. However, I'd love to get a few more numbers from some other folks out there to be absolutely sure because it's a big pain pulling them in and out. Thanks for the reply!
