Yoke seal

Ford Dudes, I replaced the pinion seal on my 99 150 with the 8.8. All went back OK with no leak but have a hum. Tried to reseat the bearing by messing with the yoke nut. Did not want to get it too tight so backed it off to snug and the hum is worse. Will try to torque it down more but I need the torque setting for the yoke nut. I can not find my manual. Does anyone know the torque setting??? Can anyone think of anything I am missing. The bearing should be good. I did not take it out cuz no hum before I took out and replaced the seal. Its not leaking anymore but Im wondering if the bearing is bad or is it just a matter of seating the yoke back right. Please help and thanks in advance.

The 8.8 uses a crush sleeve, and it's crusehed to preload the bearing. If you tightened the nut too far during reassembly-you've altered the preload on the pinion bearing, and this is the source of your noise. If you've driven it anywhere for any amount of time-that bearing race is ruined, and will need to be replaced.
Here's 2 pics of what happens when the preload is wrong on the bearing:

Crush Sleeve

Johnny, I think you might have hit the nail on the head. It did not start humming until after about 50 miles. That would be about right for the bearing to wear on the race. I'll rip it out and replace. Thanks again, Does anyone know the torque setting on the pinion nut or do I just snug it with no play?

Question

I have been fighting the same problem for going on my 3rd bearing and race for the pinion. My mechanic has changed it twice and it is making noise again. The race looked just as the picture shown above and I would love to know the fix for this. Dissasembeling the rear end is getting costly and anoying. If there is a torque spec or preload, please inform us.

There's not a torque setting-the only way I've seen it done where there was no problems with prelaod was at a friend's diff shop.
He had the rear cover off,and the axles out,and used a dial type torque wrench to setup drag preload to a certain number of inch-lbs.This was done by tightening the nut 1/4 turn after the nut contacts the cruch sleeve, and adding 1/4 turn each time until he got his desired preload. He measured this by turning the gearset via the large center nut on the drivehaft bolt flange and using the torque wrench to see how much drag the bearings had when turning the gearset.
