I am considering the purchase of a 2003 F250 6.0 but I am new to the Super Duty and Diesel engine world. As I have been browsing the forums for advice for new diesel owners, I have caught small tidbits about the 2003 6.0 engine having a lot of problems. I am wondering if any 6.0 owners could share some common problems that they have had with that engine as well as the solutions they came up with. Also, I seek advice from the veteran diesel owners as to what I should be looking for as I look over this truck for purchase. Am I better off looking for a newer model after all the kinks had been worked out by Ford? Thanks in advance for everyones advice and for taking the time!
Some of the 03's were fine. Some were junk. I would have the vin ran at a dealer to see whats been done to this truck. An Oasis check. It might be better to get an 05.
How many miles on it and how many times to the shop and how much?
It has just under 32K miles. As the XLT Long bed 2WD being sold for $21,500. One of my main motivators for purchasing a Diesel is longevity and would hate to buy a model/year that will keep me under the hood every weekend.
Good Idea about going to the dealer for the history. I got the Carfax history, which was clean but I am skeptical as to how thorough Carfax reports really are.
it seams that the '03 and even the '04 6.0's are a roll of the dice. some are just fine and some are in the shop as much as they are on the street. if you want a 6.0 an '05 or newer (as stated above) would be your safest bet
Recommend moving down to the 6.0 forum and posting your question. You'll get plenty of feedback from those that have owned or do own them. However, it appears that a majority of the problems were in the 03 and early 04 model years. Injectors, turbos, head gaskets, and EGR valves being the primary culprits. However, it's unclear to me how many of these problems were the result of power modifications, poor maintenance, and poor service.
Why get a 2wd? With that little miles watch out. It may have spent more time in the shop. If you don't need it to tow get a gasser. I wouldn't get a diesel to go to work and back, kinda wastefull.
