ok, so i have a problem. One of the tiers of my leaf spring (drivers side rear) appears to have snapped and slid over (see pics). Any idea how much leafs are and how the hck this happend. Just to not... i wasnt messin around in the truck.. noticed it wen i hit a slight bump and u could hear the tir hitting that spring.
If you can't read my writing it says "Main Spring", "Spare Tire Bracket Bolt" (the bolt that secures to the bed of the truck) and "Tier"
yeh, I think i'm going to take it to the mechanic tonight... have him put some new leafs in... I looked at prices online, i found an average of 100 a piece. Has any one seen this problem before? And also, i compared both sides of the truck i could cound 3 tiers and on the side NOT broken i can cound 4... dunno what the problem is.
Spring steel is tempered so that it can withstand flexing and return to it's original shape.. that's what makes it a spring. But, like all metals the continuous flexing will eventually break it. If the metal in 1 spring is slightly inferior to it's neighbors, then it will be the first to fail. As I'm sure you are aware, there is a lot of recycled steel in vehicles, so the quality of the metal is not always the best. This is not an uncommon problem by the way, but it's not hard to fix either.
not sure what year or model your truck is but if it is a f-150 it wouldnt be a bad idea to reaplace the hangers towards the rear of the truck...i had the same happen i was lookin around under my truck and my leaf spring hanger had broke and the leaf was against the bed.
so i took my truck to the garage today, it's going to cost me around 250. The springs are obsolete from Ford (they dont carry them any more) so the springs will be rebuilt.
I had the same spring problem with my 94' F-150 and I got the replacement spring (1 off each side of the same donor truck) and put them on in the place of the broken ones. Then I added an extra spring to each side. It was a simple job other than that the spring hangers are very hard to get off. I had heard that a chisel and a hammer could take the heads off the rivets, but I had to torch mine off. Just to let you know you can expect to pay about $50 - $60 per rear spring hanger from the Ford garage, and i'm sure you will need them. It is a common problem that was caused by the shape and location of the bracket.
