hard shifting
I willl start with a breif history,
i had no clue what kind of service had been done to this truck when i bought it. the transmission seemed to be a bit off at first so i had it flushed. i was not pleased with how the fluid looked after the flush so i replaced the filter about 1.5 years ago(approx 15k miles). like a noob, i used III as suggested by the local auto parts store where i purchased the filter. during a 500 mile road trip i noticed the rpms were higher than normal on the highway and shifting was erratic. after checking the fluid for proper level, i realized that i had put the wrong type in. after returning home, i had it flushed again with the proper type. i feel confident that most of the III was replaced with V. after the second flush it acted fine. now this past summer (6mos ago) i went to the outer banks for vacation in which i took the truck out on to the beach. everthing seemed fine then until the return trip home(700 miles). i noticed that it would downshift hard when stopping and again when taking off. at that time i had gotten the code p1744. after clearing the code it had not returned until about 2 mos ago. it seemed to reserface after doing a bit of off road fun. seems putting it into 4wd may have caused this. the tranny will hard shift with and/or without the code active. it does not do the hard shifting all of the time seems only to happen after about a 30 mile trip, does not seem to make a difference if it is highway or city travel. any ideas to what can be happening and/or what can be causing this. i am looking into installing a tranny cooler to try to keep it cooler. assuming that heat is causing it to hard shift. any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.
the fluid looks and smells good and is at proper level.
