2003, Ford, Expedition, 5.4L, disk brakes all around. My question is, the parking brake pedal is going to the floor and the vehicle doesn't hold on a incline very good anymore. That's telling me it's time to adjust the shoes that are within the rear disks. How is this done short of pulling off the rear wheel calipers, caliper cradles, and rotors, to access the adjustment wheel. The rear of the vehicle has independent suspension, and i don't see anyway to access through the backing plate like my F150. What is the solution?
Are you sure the backing plated doesn't have a small rubber plug that you can pull out? That's where mine adjusts (2000 Exp). I think there is a mechanism to auto-adjust these things (or course they don't work so well) but try this: Put your emergency brake on as well as you can and then force the truck in reverse for a few feet, release the brake and repeat a couple of times. I did this (completely by accident the first time, as you might imagine) but SURPRISE my parking brake works much better - does not go to the floor anymore. I think I freed-up the adjuster... Who knows...
i have yet to even look at mine. but on other vehicle the actul parking brake adjustment is made on the cable . look for an adjustment under the truck and have someone put the e brake on and see if the cable is even taunt.
HETERODOX1: Even if there is a rubber plug that allows access to the parking brake adjuster, there are many suspension components, i.e., upper/lower suspension arms and various torsion links and attachments that abut right on or next to the wheel backing plates. This causes a very limited view of the plate itself. There's no way of working a brake spoon or screwdriver blade from the backside.
WRENCHTURNER: I was thinking the same thing, looking up & down the brake cable run for adjustment points at the equalizer or anywhere else. But none found. Thanks Fellas for your inputs!
I have a 98 and have adjusted the brake by just removing the rubber plug and using a screw driver to adjust the brake. Technically brake should automatically adjust by rapid braking while in reverse. Never seems to work for me though.
