Transmission problem

This is for a '94 Explorer Limited Edition, automatic tranny. The level in the transmission is dropping. There are no visible leaks, no puddles under the car. When shifting starts to slow down, we add more fluid to top up. But the engine oil level is going up!! Is it possible for the tranny fluid to leak into the engine????
If so, how expensive might it be?

Joe

you need a new modulator valve, engine vacuum is sucking the tranny fluid into the engine. You will find the dead valve on the passenger side of the transmission hidden behind the exhaust pipe..

Thanks, Aquanaut20. From the research I've done, it sounds like a common problem. Guess I know what I'm doing this weekend...

what out the rod that comes out with it. Loose it and your toast. Its 1/16 thick and about a 1/2 to an inch long.

no problem! I learned the hard way at the Ford dealership I worked at and had half the shop crawling around looking for the dang thing. It took about 20 minutes but one of the guys found it in a crack in the concrete 20 feet away from my work area. It was pretty funny to laugh about afterwards.

Thanks to all

who replied to my post. Got the modulator valve in on Friday (took all day)and no, it was NOT a fun job. I attacked it from above since I could barely see it from underneath the truck. The most difficult part was getting the new valve in past the o-ring, even with lubricating the ring. I had to lever it in with a big a$$ wrench. But it's in and it makes a HUGE difference in the way the truck runs now, both in how the engine accelerates and how the transmission shifts.
The tip about the pin is well-taken. Even the brief instructions that came with the new part mentions it.

Thanks again,
Joe

did you give her fresh oil too?
since the tranny fluid was being sucked into the engine?
