Hey guys, I changed the oil about 3 weeks ago and noticed a leak. I put in 0W40 full synthetic, it was that rotella oil. Anyways, it wasn't leaking before the oil change and I have no clue what type of oil that was in it before, but I did know that it needed one badly. I've been noticing small drops of oil in the snow on my driveway, its not a huge leak at all its just a collection of small drops. Any ideas on what this could be?
also check your oil filter they have a way of coming loose.
Not if you do it right.........
VOM FSeries/Econoline Owners guide 7.3 Liter Diesel filter install......
Clean the filter mounting area of the oil cooler, lightly coat the gasket surface with clean engine oil and hand tighten until gasket contacts the base. THEN TIGHTEN ANOTHER....... 1 1/4 to 2 TURNS. Fill the crankcase and check for leaks.
Hey guys, its not leaking anywhere from there. Theres a good seal on the drain plug, and the oil filter is super tight. I quickly looked underneath the truck today so see where it was coming from. There isn't any drip formations coming off the oil filter or the oil pan, it looks like it's coming just behind the oil pan and I noticed it was dripping on to the axle. Any ideas?
It could be the rear main seal, front main seal or your lift pump gasket needs to be replaced. which side of the oil pan is wet? It might be your oil pan gasket too.
Check the bell housing drain spout, any oil from the valley pan can weep into the bell housing and drain out the spout. PS what color is the oil black or red.....
I would see how many leaks "go away" by just going back to convetional oil and drive it a week. if it has been running on regular oil most of it's life it's almost a sure bet that it'll leak with synthetic.
I've found oil leaks on the front of my engine due to under torqued water pump bolts that run through to the gear housing, removed bolts one at a time, cleaned and sealed with "ultrablue" and retorqued - no more oil leak.
ya I have no idea where its coming from, I'm gonna wait till its warmer out to tinker with it. Its been -40 lately....not very fun to work outside in that temp.
hmm...well since its not really leaking very much, I'm not that worried. I'm gonna switch back to regular non synthetic 15w40 when the snow starts to melt.
