I have a 1998 ranger with a 3,0 motor. I had the motor replaced after driving 550 miles fogging the hiway with oil smoke, 12 qts of oil and I made it home. Had the motor replaced with a 72,00 mile junkyard motor. The mechanic told me my front 02 sensors were reading rich and the rear was reading lean indicating a clogged cat. converter. I gutted the cat. converter and replaced all 3 [02] sensors. The sensors are now indicating rich and I am only getting 9-10 mpg. The maf has been replaced and also the egr valve. My original motor got 18 mpg. and had 216000 miles on it when it gave up. What is happening? I also was wondering about a core charge for the junkyard motor, I was told I would have to pay an extra 100 dollars if I wanted my old motor because the junkyard wanted what was left of my old motor returned to them........????
How about the MAP sensor? What kind of vacuum are you pulling?
I'm sure you have a Check Engine Light. Take it to the local auto parts store (Advance, AutoZone) and get the codes pulled and report back to us what they are.
I'd get cats back on it soon, OBD-II doesn't like it when you start gutting.
I hate to break it to you, but your cylinder walls are probably glazed now and you'll have to tear down the engine to fix that. A compression test will tell you.
