Where's my ABS??????

Hi Folks,
When I first got the truck (90 F250 4x4), the rear abs light was on. It went off a couple of times the 1st 50 miles of the trip home, then went off and stayed off. Been a year and a half and no light, but hit the brakes yesterday on a wet road and the back locked up and had everyone looking at me. Any suggestions on what to check out and pointers on how to do it?

Thanks,

Dave

I don't know exactly what you need to look at off the top of my head, but i do have the Shop manuals if need be. I do know that the ABS is not on the wheels its on the axle... So i don't know how that would work but i know my truck slidesa as well if i stop on a patch of ice.. ABS didnt do crap

Thank You!! I'll do some crawling as soon as it dries up a little. I've never noticed it locking up except twice. Both time, the road was wet after a dry spell (not much different than ice). Maybe things aren't so drastic.

If you back wheels are starting to lockup you may have oil on the brake shoes.

Not to be thick headed, and I'll check that as soon as weather permits, but how would oil make it lock? The oily one would make the dry one lock? Or is it more complicated than that?

Thanks, Dave

You're the boss............. Now, when I check things out and find wet shoes, fix whatever the cause is and replace the shoes, do I put it back together as normal? Or' is there something special that I have to do? I've got a haynes manual on the way, will it help me out?

Thanks again,

Dave

The ABS on my89F150 was lit up constantly a few years back and I posted for help on this forum. The way I understand it the ABS normally lights up when you start the engine as a safety check ..then should go out. I cleaned a sensor located top of the differential, and eventually the problem cleared up.

In your case you have the opposite -always off-I would check the ABS codes (can't recall the details but should be posted) to isolate a potential brake or electrical problem ... just my 2 cents.

My 83 F150 was locking one wheel so yesterday I replaced the wheel bearing and seal (9" rear end) and used brake parts cleaner to clean the oil off the shoes, drum and backing plate.
Seems to be working for now, no you do not have to do anything special other than clean everything up.
Had this happen to me once before on my 50 dodge but that was back in 1959.
