Hello all
my ? I am planning on takeing a 84 stepside box and putting on my 80 fullsize 4x4 has anyone done this before (i am sure some one has) any tips
I'm planning on cutting the frame right behind the cab, mesure twice, put in plate 2 bolts on each side of cut weld the outside of the frame, inside top and bottom. (plate will be in the way to weld any more)
I will post some pic before I start and dureing and after hopefully
any advise please
Why are you cutting the frame??? the stepside box will bolt right up the only thing you will need the gas filler necks and rubber hoses for the stepside as they will be bent differently than a styleside bed.
a lot of engineering goes into truck frames, for your own sake, if you're not a mech. engineer, just find another frame, or deal with the long bed. its not as easy of a project to do right, and safely, as it sounds...
Not a good idea to cut or weld or mess with those at all.
Also in some states you have to be a certified welder to even weld a trailer hitch to a frame.
Not a good idea messing with the frame.
If the 1980 is a long bed, it would be much easier to get a 8 foot flareside box out of an older truck. Then modify what you need for the box like swapping the 1984's tailgate and fenders to that. Much safer way to do it too.
If the 1980 is a shortbed, then it's pretty much a bolt on swap.
