I have '96 302 Automatic and the trans started shifting hard about a week ago. If i am on the throttle it wont change gears until i let outta the throttle to allow it to change and when i get on a hill the trans cant decide what gear it wants it will go to 3rd then 4th and instantly go back to 3rd. any ideas on what could be wrong? hopefully a sensor of some kind and not a trans..
The MLP sensor (Transmission Range Sensor) also can cause this and not set codes.
Get the codes pulled if there are any and let us know. Also I am assuming that this is a 4R70W but there is the rare 5.0/E4OD combination so we need to kow that also.
subford,
the speedo doesnt work and that is another issue i am having. it hasnt worked for a while now and i cant seem to get any answers on what is the problem. i have replaced the vss twice thinking i got a bad one and that didnt work. i took it to a garage and the replaced an abs sensor aswell and that didnt work. they said they had no idea what was wrong but didnt tell me what codes it threw. as i said before the trans wasnt acting like this until about a week ago so i just kinda wrote it off that it was a different problem. Another weird thing is it snowed the other day and i went out playing that nite and the next day the speedo worked all day. the next morning it was dead again so it has got me perplexed.
Ponyracer,
i am not sure what trans it is i will check on that and let you know. the trans code inside the door is U. and i am gonna try to get the codes ran this week so i can try and get this problem resolved.
By the way for your information all PSOMs from 1992 through 1996 are the same, you may be able to get one from about $30.00 at a salvage yard but can not buy one from an Auto Parts store or from Ford.
Ford will install one but it will cost you about $450.00.
Thanks for all the help i really appreciate it..i am usually pretty good at fixing stuff on my truck but when it comes to electrical and codes some of the **** they do is almost impossible to find unless you really know what your lookin for...this will narrow it down and i should be able to figure it out now. again thanks for all the help and information
