alternator replacement

Hi, I'm new to the board. I've only had My Bronco since May, so I'm new to working on it. I need a new alternator. Is it hard to change the alternator? Its a 91 with a 5.8. I was told all I needed to do was pull up the belt tensioner with a wrench on the bolt, disconnect the wires and the two bolts holding the alternator and replace. Is that right? Thanks Marcus

alternator replacement

I did my 89 last month and I think that they are very similiar. On mine, take the belt off of the pulley, remove 1 long bolt from the front side of the engine and then a smaller one one the top of the alternator that kind of removes from the back side of the bracket. Remove the 2 connectors and work it off of the bracket.

It took me about 30 minutes to do this and that was about 10 minutes figuring out how to get it loose from the bracket.

This may not make much sense but before you put the new one on, get your pliers and put one jaw on the bracket of the lower bolt area and the other jaw on the gromet looking thing and tweak down on it a little. What this does is make it easier to put the new one back in without beating it too hard.

Sorry for being long winded.

Happy Holidays ! :-X12
