Is the Water In Fuel light supposed to come on like most of the dash lights upon turning the key to the on position??
Thanks to anyone who knows the answer to this.

Yep... lets you know it is working.'
Check you manual too... it shows it in there as well as coming on... on start-up.
My WIF light on the dash does not light up upon ignition on, if I remember right though I think If I have water in fuel It will also illuminate on my mini message center. Is that right?
on my 06 Lariat I have no WIF light. A msg comes up on the message center. Once that comes on you can reset it. Maybe it's different on an XLT. If you only have the light I would imagine that it should come on like the check engine lite and stuff.
Thanks FloridaF250, I believe you are right, however like beachbumcook said, It does say in the Owners guide diesel supplement the the "light" should come on with the dash lights when the key is turned on. I also have the F series Super Duty manual for my 06 and it does not show a dash light. I will have to read somemore to see if I can find the answer...

Read this lil' gem. Although it's title is misleading, there is a test procedure in the diagnostic mode that checks all of your dash micro-lights. This should help you get the answers you need an the lights health. http://dan.prxy.org/Truck/Other/High_Idle/Odometer_Trick.html

I can see this on an 03 F350. On the 06 F250 lariat that I have, I have never had a light, never ever. The only WIF warning that I had came up in the msg center and it wasn't a lite it said "Water In Fuel" and then you could reset it. Also I don't have a Trip button. When you go through a system check on the dash msg center it tells you that your Oil Pressure's good, your trans temp is good, your brake system is good, I can't remember them all. May brother in law has an 05 King Rancher and he has no lite either. mayber pre-04 have the light and not the msg in the msg center.
I just copied this out of the 6.0 sup book.
Water in fuel
During refueling, it is possible for water-contaminated diesel fuel to be pumped into your tank. Your vehicle fuel system is equipped with a fuel filter/water separator to remove water from the fuel. The WATER IN FUEL light will illuminate when the ignition is turned to START (as part of the light function check) and when the FCM/HFCM has a significant quantity of water in it.
(it didn't copy the pictures, I've written beside them what they are)
Type A Fuel Pump
Type B WATER
IN
FUEL
Type C WATER IN FUEL
If the light illuminates when the engine is running, stop the vehicle as soon as safely possible, shut off the engine, then drain the FCM/HFCM.
Refer to
Draining the FCM/HFCM and changing the fuel filters in the Maintenance and Specifications chapter of this supplement for the drain procedure. Allowing water to stay in the system could result in extensive damage to, or failure of, the fuel injection system
On the page before this it shows three different dashes. I think that the TYPE A,B or C corrisponds to which dash you have.
Thats only my theory anyway.
