Has anyone used a universal wiring harness to rewire thier truck? I need to put a new harness in my truck and I was thinking of using a harness from ez wiring. I thought I would ask you guys about your experiance first.
thanks
The hardest part of that swap will be the steering column wiring since it is setup for a chevy style connector. The good thing will be that you can buy the column connector halves and wire them according to both diagrams to take the guess work out of it. Are you planning on using new switches as well or reusing the headlight fuse block as a terminal holder for instance? Either way it will be easy as long as you take your time and come up with your game plan before you jump right in.
I am planning on using my stock switches. The harness is the new gm mini fuse block. I think I can modify it to work with a ford coloumn without to much trouble. I was going to switch the column out to a 70s ford truck so I can run a 70s ford truck steering box. I guess I could look into putting a gm column in.
You dont need to put in a GM column. The wire connector is all you would need to purchase. I don't remember if the harness comes with it preassembled or just the wire coloring for you to modify it to fit. Just match what the wire is for out of the column to the ez-wiring harness. Like a one for one swap or pairing. An example would be column left front turn signal wire to the ez-wiring harness left front turn signal wire. Add to this a common connector that will allow for a disconnect without having to cut and splice the wires again.
Centechwire is great for plug and play. It is roughly 200 more then the kit Jared66 purchased. If most of us didn't like cursing our frustrations at the things we work on then that would definately be a good kit. However I like to think that all the mean spirited things I say to a truck are better directed at it vise the other half. Think of it as therapy, you would spend just as much talking to someone why you feel the way you do. A project never gets hurt feelings plus it doesn't hold it against you later while your on the couch. I also like the statisfation after everything is said and done that I did it with a kit or from scratch.
I am using Ford harnesses from the model year (1996) of the truck that donated my 460 EFI engine and E4OD.
With the engine, I got the engine compartment wiring harness which has the ECU computer, Power Distribution box with relays, injector connectors, MAF, sensors, engine bay lights, turn signals, headlights, etc. A giant connector feeds through the firewall to the Dash harness (which I got from the same truck) which has the Fuse Panel, connection to gauges and switches and lighting, a keyless entry computer etc. A third major harness connects to the transmission and out to the tail lights.
It took me a while with the harnesses spread out on the floor and a wiring diagram to figure it all out, but in the end it should be pretty simple to put together. Having my '95 Bronco to use as a template helps too.
I have spares of the Engine Compartment harness and Dash Harness which I got directly from Ford. They are officially obsolete now, so I got a deal. I will ultimately be looking to sell them (no profit, just what I paid), but not until I get my truck up and running.
This solution might not be relevant to others, but because I am doing the EFI conversion, this was the best way I could figure to integrate the computer and all necessary sensors to the 1966 truck. Essentially I am wiring the truck from scratch to be a 1996 F250.
I will have a GM column soon as seen in my gallery. Has real ivory dice embedded in the horn is tilt and already modified to a Slick. I would consider a trade for a stock one.
For approx. $250 can purchase repo engine, taillight, and alternator harness which are the same as original. Kinda pricey, but same wire code and connectors as origninal, unplug old and plugin the new. Unfortunately, can't find repo dash harness. Repaired dash harness while at same time added couple extra circuits. If decide to go w/ aftermarket, suggest use the non adhesive wrapping tape designed for wiring harnesses.
