i have an excursion with the 7.3l. lately when im driving i notice that when i touch the throttle up until about 2000 rpms it sounds like a lot of air rushing under the hood. it sounds like it is coming from the center near the ypipe. i dont know a whole lot about the diesel except what i have learned on here. so im wondering, does this have something to do with the turbo? when i get on the throttle i can hear the turbo whine, but im wondering if it is running like it should. the truck seems sluggish. any help would be appreciated. thanks
Sounds like a boost leak, check all the clamped connections at the Y pipe and the Intercooler tubes. Also look at the back side of the turbo. There are two pipes there coming from the Exhaust manifolds. Look and see if there is any soot on them.
i went out and climbed under the hood, checked all the connections to the ypipe and didnt see anything out of the ordinary or loose. i couldnt locate the 2 pipes behind the turbo to the exhaust. are there any other ways to check for a boost leak? thanks
is it only when the engine is cold or does it happen even after the truck reaches normal operating temp?
Yes, this is important.
Also follow the two up-pipes from the exhaust manifolds to the turbo inlet and make sure that there isn't any tell-tale signs of an exhaust leak. It's easy to pick out by the black soot stains around the flanges. That would explain the hissing noise and the general lack of power. Gotta have exhaust pressure to make boost and gotta have good boost to make good power.
Any exhaust leaks = power loss.
When I was installing my Banks system the manual said the two up pipes from the exhaust manifold to the turbo were loose when on lots of vehicles that entered their shop. The manual recomended to inspect and tighten prior to installing the banks sustem. This could be a location for the leak. Mine were loose also and I only have 30k miles. Another place you might want to look is the hot pipe going to the intercooler on the driver side. Mine didnt look like it was leaking at first but I soon noticed due to the oil from my CCV it was popping loose. Just some of my experiences hope it might help you find your problem.
it seems to be all the time, hot or cold. now that you mention the exhaust, i think i do recall smelling some mild exhaust fumes in the cab. can i see these pipes to the exhaust from on top on the engine or from the bottom? thanks for all your help fellas.
Best viewed from the bottom up. Follow the exhaust manifold to the turbo, look for soot. I still think it could be your EBPV. It's function is based on oil temp not coolant temp.
I just posted a similar question and have been looking into it. Mine does the same thing only when cold as it gets up to temp it gets less and less and eventually disappears. It did not do it until the temps really dropped.
