Question Rear Diff Gasket--question

What up.

I got an oily-looking rear diff and I am going to replace the rear diff seal (at the same time I do the tranny pan, might as well get dirty all at once)...

my question is...

when I open up the rear pumpkin and scoop out all of the gunk...what else should I be looking for? I have no issues with the Ford 9" rear other than that wet look....but since I'll be in there anyway...

any advice would be appreciated.

peace,

Grizz

Hi BigGrizz76,you do realize that you will have to pull the axles out a ways to remove the center section on a 9" rear?

Really??? to remove the cover? I only want to replace the gasket to get it to stop leaking.

If it has a cover it's not a Ford 9". The 9" has a removable carrier and the guts come out all together from the front.

If it has a rear cover you don't need a gasket. Get the cover really clean and dry. Put a bead (1/8" to 3/16") of RTV on the face of the cover. Let it set for about 10 minutes while you're cleaning the mating flange on the housing. Install the cover and torque up in a criss-cross pattern and you're done.

thanks Mil1ion...that is a good site...

so I am 100% positive that it is a Ford 9"...there is the oily look...

I thought that I could drop the drive line, pull out the pinion and then reseal the front where it bolts to the back...but that doesn't sound right from what I am hearing...

what the ballpark to get this rear end from leaking if done by a professional?
