I will be towing a travel trailer for the first time with my 01 F250 V10 that I just recently purchased. I believe its a 28 footer loaded with camping gear. My question is do I tow all 200 miles with the OD off? By doing this my rpms will be higher right? Any info on the best way to tow a travel trailer will be apprreciated. Thank you.
Tow in the tallest gear that the torque converter will stay locked and the transmission does not downshift. On the back cover of the Ford towing guides there is a paragraph from Ford motor company stating that information.
Quote:
Driving with an Automatic Overdrive Transmission
With certain car and compact truck automatic overdrive transmissions, towing - expecially in hilly areas - may result in excessive shifting between overdrive and the next lower gear.
If this occurs, it is recommended that the overdrive gear be locked out to eliminate the condition and provide steadier performance (see your vehicle's Owner Guide for information).
When there is no excessive shifting, use the overdrive gear for optimum fuel economy.
Overdrive also may be locked out to obtain engine braking on downgrades.
