Bed mounting to chassis

Hi all,

When I got my 56, the bed was just resting on the chassis directly and the bed wood had been replaced with a piece of rotted out plywood. I would like to know what the original mounting consisted of.
I assume that there are packing peices/spacers under the rear cross member and under the front crossmember. What are these made of and how thick should they be?
Are there more spacers under the center cross members too, they seem to be angled slightly to take into acount the hump on the chassis rails. But dont seem to be lining up.
I am planning on going with the tipping bed idea I had a while ago, but would like to know how it all should have gone together in the first place to make sure that I get it all sitting correctly.
Thanks
Lee

Yes there is a total of eight rubber pads that are shaped like a square with a hole in the middle. I purchased mine thru www.truckandcarshop.com and they are called bed to frame pads part # 53-16521. Its frustrating, took me a bit but it does line up

Thanks Inno,

Can you tell me what thickness the pads are? I just had a quick look at your gallery and the second pic shows exactly what I had. i.e. rear metal sitting directly on the frame and the center cross members up above the rails.

So I guess that the rubbers either get left out a lot or they disintegrate over time.

Cheers

Lee,

When I mounted the bed on my 49 I made my own rubber pads. I found a local gasket and seal supplier that carried reinforced rubber in sheets. After buying the guys in the shop a round of soft drinks they gave me a leftover piece of 3/16" thick reinforced rubber sheeting. I cut out the size squares I needed and punched the holes in the center with a gasket punch and I was in business.

I used some reproduction pieces I got from another FTE member (thanks Newt!) and they were about 1/8 inch thick.

Thats great, I thought it was something like that, I should be able to make something up myself as you did Bobby.

Cheers

On my 54 I used the DC kit. As I recall, the two connection points nearest the axle were thin and the two connection points at the front and rear of the bed were thick. So, the then ones were 1/8" and the thick were 1/4". The test is to see if the bedwood is setting on the frame. Jag
